Notable Quotable: Wesley

"Orthodoxy, or right opinion, is, at best, a very slender part of religion. Though right tempers cannot subsist without right opinions, yet right opinions may subsist without right tempers. There may be a right opinion of God without either love or one right temper toward Him. Satan is proof of this."
-John Wesley

  1. I suppose those who are not circumcised in their hearts are certainly the Bible's definition of dead orthodoxy. However, truth matters. The tension posed by Kirkegaard between the dead "worship" of the orthodox Lutheran as opposed to the offering of the heartfelt idolator is a false choice. They are both wrong. Jesus says true worshippers must worship in spirit (small s) and truth.
As a former Methodist, I can only say it is difficult to offend someone who believes in everything and/or nothing. This pretty well describes the Methodist church today. Someone once said that the Methodists have 2 doctrines: 1) God is nice and 2) we should be nice too.
